Cameroon recently scooped an innovation award at the World Smart City awards, last month in Barcelona, Spain.
The awards were organized ahead of the Smart City Expo World Congress, a global congress for intelligent and innovative cities in the world.
Cameron was honoured with the Innovation Idea award for its solar electrification project in rural areas.
According to the Ministry of Water and Energy, the electrification project through solar energy called the Microgrid Solar Plant was conceived with the help of Chinese technology firm Huawei technologies co Ltd.
The first phase of the project which concerns 166 rural areas has been implemented at 89,5% with the installation of Photovoltaic panels in 149 villages. This phase is expected to improve the lives of over 150.000 persons once finished.
The second phase of the project will electrify at least 184 localities.
